State of the Industry
Illinois just celebrated its 8th consecutive year of record tourism growth. Yet DuPage’s piece of that pie keeps shrinking year after year. DuPage is at a critical crossroads.

Our competitors have prioritized industry growth. Their investments in staffing, promotion and infrastructure have delivered big gains — and DuPage has fallen behind. We are losing out on millions of dollars each year.

Additionally, Chicago’s explosion in hotel inventory poses a big threat. While other destinations are also carving out new ways to lure visitors and their dollars — Rockford for example, recently announcing its planned casino.

DuPage can no longer take for granted that tourism will be able to sustain itself. It’s time for DuPage to get in the game.

Coalition for Tourism
Representing DuPage’s diverse assets and leaders in hospitality, we have come together to plan for the future of economic development and tourism in the county — with a focus on people, jobs, community and success for the entire region.

Despite DuPage’s size and significant assets, as a destination we invest less than 1/3rd of other destinations with a similar industry base. This is no longer enough to keep the industry healthy.

The goal of the Coalition is to educate all stakeholders on the state of the industry and the critical need for proactive measures, calling for greater industry investment and active collaboration amongst business and community leaders in seeking sustainable solutions.

When Tourism Thrives, so Does Business
Tourism is currently one of the top three industries in DuPage. Funding tourism is pro-business.
DuPage has one of the largest suburban hotel markets in the United States. We must recognize the influence a strong tourism industry has on DuPage’s economy.*

With greater investment, DuPage can achieve:

  • an additional $650 million in new visitor spend by 2025;

  • more than 1 million new hotel room nights;

  • and $11.5 million in local taxes to support DuPage communities.

*A thriving visitor economy reduces the tax burden of the average DuPage household by approximately $1,300 per year.
